So, my kid-watching this weekend fell through at the very last minute, and to amend the situation (the boys threw a massive tantrum when their mother picked them up from school instead of me!) and deal with all the sudden free time we had - we all went camping...

About an hour and a half south-east of Indianapolis, the Hardin Ridge recreational area is a handy escape for the local city folk. The weather was still amazing, and since the park closes for the winter season in a week, we picked the perfect time to get out there. With the leaves in full autumn swing, the otherwise uneventful ride was a little more appealing. The dogs, sadly, don't care about the beautiful fall colors, so they were bored out of their minds during the combined 6 hours we spent in the car (we had to drive back to Indy for the older kids' football games on Saturday.)

Hike's used to having the back all to himself (and he's generally a great traveler), but this time he had to share with Zoey (which isn't a problem, since they would gladly sit on each other's heads if the need arose) and Bailey (which was a problem, since the old girl needs *her* space.) We couldn't leave them at the campsite when we had to go somewhere, so I'm sure we were a sight for sore eyes: three adults, three kids, three dogs, a baby and a turtle (don't ask!) piled into a truck.

I had my camera with me at all times, but I didn't take many pictures. Although it was GORGEOUS, it was the type of gorgeous that you have to take in - you can't really capture it on film (or memory card.) I'll never complain about Indiana and its flat land again - there were some steep hills to climb. We spent the better part of the trip exploring a leafy ravine that was dug so deep in the ground, the sun couldn't break through the tree cover to reach us. The dried creek bed housed all sorts of critters, the funnest (and coolest) of which were salamanders. The dogs ran amok around us, hot on the trails of unseen wildlife but never straying too far.

It was exhausting in the best of ways. I really wish I could have documented it better but like I said, the environment was photo-limiting. You had to keep it light and have both hands free to get anywhere.

My picture this week reflects how both me and Hike feel at the moment - emotionally and physically drained! I had to crop it weird because it was really a vertical shot with a lot of blank space around it. I took a handful of nice pictures in the great outdoors but I liked this one best - especially the nose reflection and the smudges on the window. Seems more real somehow.

You know that feeling where you almost don't know if you're awake or dreaming because you're so tired? Yeah, I'm there right now.

Hey, women have their "Whats in your bag shots ". This is the male version of that. Yesterday I washed the outside of my truck, today was the insides turn. I breezed through the cab interior , Windexing and Armor-Alling everything and then I opened up the back. Ugh, I am always being asked by friends " Hey Bill, can you come over and help me do this and.........". So I load up the tools I need and go. Somehow though I never unload anything. Perhaps that is why my truck rattles and hums going down the road and my gas mileage has dropped precipitously. What is really sad though is that I had already taken in 4 or 5 armloads of stuff before I grabbed my camera to take this shot. But like I was taught so many many years ago as a Boy Scout "Be Prepared" LOL. "
